Founder & Director of the World Building Institute & World Building Media Lab

Alex McDowell RDI is a narrative and systems designer and creative director working across all media to build new visual stories. He uses the practice of world building that he has been developing, practicing and teaching since 2000 to prototype the future and create change.

Throughout his 30-year in production design for cinema, McDowell has collaborated with Steven Spielberg (Minority Report, The Terminal), Tim Burton (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory) and David Fincher (Fight Club), among many others. In parallel he has worked in theatre, animation, video and film, graphic media, mixed reality, live and digital space and in real time for clients and partners that include studios, corporations, institutions, and creators.

He believes that design transcends the silos of the industrial era, and that narrative storytelling is a global form that destroys walls and opens unique collaboration.

The design systems that he and his teams employ support the development of a holistic narrative space, while engaging new digital processes to enable revolutionary non-linear, rhizomic and immersive creative environments.
