DescriptionWe introduce U-Net neural networks for creating shaded relief for terrain maps. The networks are trained with hand-drawn shaded relief art. They replicate cartographic design principles for removing unnecessary terrain details, locally adjusting the illumination direction to accentuate terrain features, and varying brightness to emphasise large landforms.
