Eliot Smyrl joined Pixar in 1989 as a member of the RenderMan software team. He transitioned to television commercial production in 1991 and then was a TD and lead TD on feature films from Toy Story through Cars 2. After that he joined the Studio Tools software development group and has been the lead engineer for the Digital Backlot project since 2014.
